EDUCATION PROGRAM

The education and employment of interns, lawyers in training and young professionals is an essential part of our work at the ECCHR. The center is committed to ensuring that the next generation of lawyers develops competence and expertise in human rights litigation. We host as many as fifteen participants in our on-going training. Our programs are appropriate for those with a legal background, or an education in political science, international relations, translation, public relations and outreach, web design, and communication or fundraising. All applicants must have knowledge of human rights legislation and the NGO sector. Since 2008, the ECCHR has sponsored more than 150 interns, graduates and lawyers from more than 25 European and Non-European countries.

Interns
Interns in the Education Program assist the ECCHR staff according to their degree of legal education. Participants conduct research, engage in web design, organize conferences, provide public relations and outreach support, fundraise, translate, and edit on behalf of the Center. All participants are exposed to the development of legal analyses. The program provides a comprehensive education in the work of an international NGO. In addition to attending the Center’s internally organized lectures, interns are giving access to a myriad of international events in Berlin, which deal with the development of human rights legislation and foreign relations.

Trainee Lawyers
The Education Program for Postgraduate Judicial Service trains participants in the legal application of the concepts of human rights in judicial practices. Specifically, the program fosters a practical and theoretical approach for the enforcement of human rights by national and international of litigation. The fight for human rights takes place in various fora. The furthering of human rights litigation requires a worldwide network of experienced human rights trial lawyers, a broad knowledge of national, European and international law and of foreign law systems. Trainees support the Center’s lawyers in their daily work. This entails research tasks, drafting of official legal and non-legal writs as well as the attendance of internal discussions regarding single aspects of the legal work and strategies. Furthermore, Trainees have the opportunity to attend regularly organized internal lectures by experts and international events in Berlin, which deal with the development of human rights legislation and foreign relations. Applicable only in some countries, the program fulfills the prerequisite for qualification for the Bar exam.

Young Professionals
Young Professionals have the opportunity to supervise own projects and cases. Participants take advantage of the close cooperation and teamwork within the ECCHR. Close contact with the staff at the ECCHR will enable professionals to further their perspectives in the field of human rights work, and can easily lead to follow-up projects.

Seminars and Lectures
ECCHR organizes within its Education Program internal events with experts from different fields as well as external public events. These address first and foremost law students and ECCHR interns and trainee lawyers. In this regard there is cooperation with a number of universities, which leads regularly to common seminars, lectures and projects, as for example with the Humboldt University Berlin, the Centre of European Law and Politics at University of Bremen or the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin.
Topics were universal jurisdiction, enforcement mechanisms for human rights, international investment law and human rights, depleted uranium, EU refugee law, gender and human rights as well as common goods.
